Who We Are...BackgroundFamilies in Transition helps Trenton-area families in need of suitable housing. FIT's main goal is to save intact families whose stability is threatened by current or impending homelessness or whose present accomodations are otherwise unsuitable. FIT temporarily places such families in housing acquired by FIT for that purpose, and then works to get them back on their feet and into permanent homes. Selecting FamiliesFIT selects families that are currently homeless or otherwise in need of suitable housing. Ideal candidates will be stable, nuclear family units. They will in all cases have children; preferably, there will be two spouses who are the parents of the children. There will be no history of drug or alcohol abuse by any family member, or the family will be able to demonstrate that any past substance abuse problems have been, or are being, successfully treated. Families should have some financial support, or the concrete prospect of obtaining it, although each case will be reviewed individually. FIT accepts families for the FIT Transitional Housing Program only after a screening process designed to ensure that these criteria are met. Families are chosen without regard to race, religion, color or national origin. Supporting FamiliesFIT realizes that lack of shelter alone is rarely the sole problem facing families applying to the FIT Transitional Housing Program. FIT assumes responsibility for providing necessary support services to help families in FIT housing overcome whatever their problems may be. FIT's goal to help occupant families move out of FIT housing and into permanent homes within six months to one year. OrganizationFIT has a governing Board of Trustees made up of Trenton-area volunteers who are concerned about the destructive effects of homelessness on healthy families. The Trustees have varied backgrounds and credentials they bring to the task of achieving FIT's goals. Families In Transition, Inc. is a nonprofit New Jersey corporation, N.J.
